St. Johns Fragrance Company — 80 Years of Caribbean Craftsmanship. One Timeless Standard.

Some brands tell a story. St. Johns is one.

It started in the 1940s, when U.S. Navy Captain John Webb found himself stationed in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands during World War II. What he discovered there would change American grooming forever. The Caribbean island of St. John had been home to the bay rum tree for centuries — a remarkable plant whose oils had long been prized by island locals for their healing properties, distinctive fragrance, and deeply masculine character.

Captain Webb saw what others had overlooked. He blended bay leaf oil with Caribbean rum, tropical spices, and herbs native to the islands — clove, cinnamon, basil, thyme, and hints of eucalyptus and sandalwood — and in doing so, created one of the most iconic men's fragrances in American history: Bay Rum®.

The Bottle That Started a Movement

Captain Webb didn't just create an exceptional fragrance — he created an unforgettable way to present it. Inspired by the hand-woven fishing baskets he saw local fishermen using throughout the islands, he designed the now-legendary Fishpot Weave® bottle — hand-woven with palm tree fronds by Caribbean artisans, and completely unique in every single batch.

To this day, every Fishpot Weave® bottle is still crafted by hand. No two are exactly alike — and that's entirely the point.

From the Virgin Islands to the World

After the war, the timing couldn't have been better. A generation of men returning home were ready to invest in quality, grooming, and the finer things — and St. Johns Bay Rum was there to meet them.

With bold advertising campaigns in The New Yorker and national distribution through prestigious retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor, St. Johns quickly became a household name throughout the 1960s and 70s. The brand's reach extended well beyond the bathroom shelf — the iconic Fishpot Weave® bottle earned a place in American pop culture through film and television appearances in titles like M*A*S*H, Scent of a Woman, Archer, and Feud: Betty and Joan.

By 1963, consumer goods giant Warner-Lambert acquired the brand — a testament to just how far one Navy officer's Caribbean discovery had traveled.

Built Tough. Caribbean Tough.

St. Johns has weathered more than just the decades. In 1995, Hurricane Marilyn devastated the Virgin Islands and the St. Johns factory along with it — destroying equipment, product, and the Tyre palms used to weave the signature bottles. Dedicated employees worked around the clock to resume shipments within weeks.

Then in 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck the islands just five days apart, tearing the roof off the St. Johns factory and destroying most of the product and woven bottles on-site. Rather than fold, the team responded with characteristic Caribbean resilience — salvaging undamaged fragrances, commissioning a local artist to design digitally printed Fishpot Weave® bottles, and releasing a limited-edition Hurricane Series — donating a portion of every sale to island relief efforts.

That's not just a brand with good products. That's a brand with character.

St. Johns Today

Now in its 80th year, St. Johns Fragrance Company is stronger, wider-reaching, and more relevant than ever. Under the leadership of the Welles family — four American brothers who purchased the brand out of a deep personal connection to its legacy — the company has rebuilt, expanded, and introduced an entirely new generation to what authentic Caribbean grooming looks like.

The original Bay Rum® formula remains untouched — exactly as Captain Webb intended. Alongside it, a carefully curated collection of new fragrances has grown the St. Johns line to include Vetiver, West Indian Lime, 77, Madras, and Caneel Bay — each one a distinct expression of Caribbean character, handcrafted in small batches and delivered in the same iconic Fishpot Weave® bottles that have defined the brand since 1946.

With a sales and marketing office in Ridgefield, Connecticut and a loyal international fanbase spanning the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, St. Johns continues to grow — while never losing sight of what made it great in the first place.
